Raised without access to a television, Laurence Rhoderic Blackhurst IV graduated with a degree in French Literature from Colgate University before realizing the real world didn’t much care about GPAs and diplomas. He loaded up his Subaru station wagon in upstate NY and made like Lewis and Clark for the Pacific to pursue a career in filmmaking.
Rod is best known as the Emmy-nominated director of the Netflix original documentary Amanda Knox and the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award-winning narrative film Here Alone. He also produced & directed John Wayne Gacy: Devil In Disguise, Peacock's first banner true-crime series.
Most recently, Rod directed “Descent Into Darkness,” a segment of National Geographic’s Welcome to Earth series. With Darron Aronofsky as Executive Producer and Will Smith as host, the episode descends into a world of color more than half a mile beneath the sea—a directorial and cinematic feat, expanding the vision and vistas for collective audiences.
Rod’s commercial work has been recognized with an AdWeek Ark Award and has been shortlisted for a Cannes Lion.
